Position Summary:
The Photograph Archivist is responsible for the organization, preservation, and management of photographic collections within the library and information science domain. The role requires a deep understanding of archival principles and practices, as well as expertise in handling, cataloging, and digitizing photographic materials.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Evaluate, select, and acquire photographs for the library's collections based on established criteria and policies.
2. Create detailed metadata records for each photograph, including relevant information such as date, location, subject, and photographer.
3. Develop and implement standardized cataloging procedures for photographs to ensure accurate and consistent access and retrieval.
4. Conduct in-depth research on photographic collections to enhance their historical context and value.
5. Collaborate with library staff, researchers, and other stakeholders to provide guidance and support in accessing and utilizing the photograph collections.
6. Assess the condition of photographic materials, coordinate necessary conservation or preservation efforts, and maintain appropriate storage and handling practices.
7. Digitize photographs using specialized equipment and software, ensuring high-quality image capture and adherence to copyright guidelines.
8. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of the library's photograph collections, including tracking loaned materials and their return.
9. Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in photograph archiving and preservation.
10. Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to photograph archiving within the library.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. A master's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Demonstrated experience in managing photographic collections in an archival or library setting.
3. Extensive knowledge of archival principles, metadata standards, and best practices for photograph archiving.
4. Proficiency in cataloging and classification systems, such as MARC, AACR2, RDA, or other relevant standards.
5. Strong research skills with the ability to critically analyze and interpret historical photographs.
6. Familiarity with digital imaging and scanning technologies, including experience with specialized software and hardware.
7. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
8. Attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring precise documentation and metadata creation.
9. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate and work well within a team environment.
10. Knowledge of copyright laws, intellectual property rights, and ethical considerations related to photograph archiving.
